Occlusal Splint

occlusalUsed for jaw joint and muscle pain

Poor jaw alignment (malocclusion) can cause symptoms like headaches, tooth grinding, jaw pain and more.

Occlusal splint therapy or, as one dentist put it “magic plastic” is intended to :

  • reduce tooth grinding
  • relax jaw muscles
  • protect joints from damage or further breakdown
  • reduce pain / tension

One of our patients reflects,

After suffering from pain in my jaw for some time I became concerned when my jaw started to feel very stiff. I decided to visit Jane my dentist to make sure it wasn’t being caused by a dental problem. After examining me Jane told me that she believed that I was clenching my teeth which were causing the muscles in my jaw to become inflamed therefore causing the pain and the stiffness. Jane recommended a splint. I was very sceptical but decided to give the splint a try rather than depend on a medicinal route.

I needed two appointments, one for making the mould and one for the fitting of the splint. As soon as the splint was finished I started wearing it at bed time. To my delight the results were immediate. Within a few days the pain and stiffness had completely disappeared. I found the splint completely comfortable from the very beginning and have had no problem at all wearing it.

As you can see from the photograph, the splint is clear in colour and has a fairly minimal impact on the appearance of your teeth.

If you are suffering from any of the above symptoms, please mention this to your dentist as a simple solution (an occlusal splint) may solve your problem.
