Dental Hygiene

Hygiene visits are not just about cleaning your teeth and providing you with effective tooth brushing techniques, advice can also be given on dietary habits, smoking, examples of different cleaning products and fluoride use – all of these have a direct effect on how healthy your teeth and gums will be. Many people believe that bleeding gums are normal, but they are not. Just as you would go to see an optician or your doctor if your eye was dripping with blood, you should see a dental professional if your gums are bleeding – there is no difference. Now, you do not need to see a dentist first, you can just telephone the practice to make an appointment with our hygienist.

Gum disease is caused by plaque which consists of food debris and bacteria which is left behind on our teeth every day. The plaque, if not removed by regular tooth brushing, causes irritation to our gums which can lead to gum disease. The symptoms of gum disease are:

  • Inflammation or swelling of the gums
  • Bleeding gums when brushing or eating
  • Bad taste in mouth
  • Bad breath

We have different types of cleaning appointments available to suit everyone’s needs – from an express clean for that special occasion to more intense treatments for those who feel they may have gum disease.

Express Clean

20 minute appointment costing

£46

FOR THOSE SHORT OF TIME WHO WANT INSTANT RESULTS BEFORE A BIG OCCASION

The tooth surface over time can become stained by food and drinks, including red wine, black tea, coffee and cigarettes: this staining on the tooth’s surface can leave them discoloured. The Express clean includes the use of an air polisher to remove stains on your front teeth.

This is purely a cosmetic clean for the front surfaces of your front teeth. You will be advised if you would benefit from further gum treatment.

Routine Clean

35 minute appointment costing

£82

IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT YOUR ORAL HEALTH, STAINING AND TARTAR BUILD UP, WE PROVIDE A MORE THOROUGH CLEAN TO GET INTO THOSE HARD TO REACH AREAS WHILST ALSO GIVING ADVICE ON PREVENTATIVE MEASURES TO MINIMISE FUTURE DENTAL DISEASE

Untreated, plaque hardens to form tartar which cannot be removed with simple brushing and if left untreated, the condition will only worsen. Tartar requires removal by your dentist or hygienist and once the tartar and any staining are removed from the tooth surface, the area will be easier to clean. Thereafter, effective regular twice daily tooth brushing and flossing will resolve any inflammation left behind.

At this appointment, we will assess your oral health and advise you of your treatment needs, before gently removing any tartar and staining using an ultrasonic scaler (tickling vibrations to loosen larger pieces of tartar ) and hand scalers (removes smaller pieces of tartar and smooths the surface of the tooth).

This appointment will be finished by polishing the teeth, removing any remaining staining and leaving you with fresh thoroughly cleaned teeth and gums.

In Depth Clean

45 minute appointment costing

£100

If you are aware of previously diagnosed gum disease, you may require an intense clean. For this appointment we carry out a routine clean (as detailed above) but also clean under the gum line with the ultrasonic scaler and hand scalers. We record the health of your gums by measuring pocket depths, bleeding points and the amount of plaque on your teeth so we can monitor their future health.
