I am one of 13 lucky dentists who have qualified from the University of Malta in 2003. The course only took an intake of 13 students every 2 years at the time, and there was a lot of individual attention available from lecturers that had a lot of practical and academic experience who also possessed post graduate UK qualifications in their chosen specialist areas. Another big advantage which I realise other dentists do not have is that the first 3 years of the dental degree course was merged with the Doctor of Medicine degree. I find this really useful nowadays as it gives me an in depth knowledge of the medical conditions patients present with when they attend for their dental treatment.

I came to the UK in 2005 after being enticed by my lecturers and british expats in Malta. I worked under the NHS system for a year and a half, but treatment targets were not the reason I wanted to become a dentist so I looked for several other jobs until I found the right one; a fully private job at the Dental Healthcare Centre. After 3 months of interviews I was shortlisted and given the job.

For the first few years I was in heaven; I went back home feeling good about myself, then I started seeing that patients were asking for more and more complex treatment. Therefore I decided to use my savings and invest in further education. In 2010 I achieved my Diploma in Restorative Dentistry by the Royal College of Surgeons and in 2011 I was awarded a Distinction for a Master of Science in Clinical Restorative Dentistry by the University of Leeds.

It wasn’t long before I realised that there were more and more patients who needed dental implants as part of their Complex restorative treatments, and having had considerable exposure to dental implants already by working with Mike Heads I decided to use my savings into learning more about dental implants. It was no use doing lots of little courses; I wanted to do it right. I was awarded a Diploma in Dental Implants by the Royal College of Surgeons of England; a degree which is well known by dentists to be hard to achieve. But a Diploma by itself isn’t really enough. I was lucky enough to have lots of input and tips and tricks by Mike Heads himself who has around 28 years of experience under his belt!

So here I am, in a perfect position to treat complex cases. I know how to stabilise the gums, the bite, assess mouths and jaws properly and make up a solid tailor made plan for each individual patient. And after all this, execute the plan with a tenacious sense of doing it right, keeping in mind the individual needs and preferences of each patient who has put their trust in myself.

And at the end of the day, if the patient is happy, I am happy, and I like being happy.

In my personal life I am married to a gorgeous local lady called Theresa and was blessed in having two just as gorgeous sons Rafael and Luca. I play a bit of guitar and like to tinker with anything that I can get my hands and brains onto.
