VELscope

The Mucosal Examination System

The VELscope system’s introduction into dentistry provides clinicians with a quick, easy and safe method of screening patients for any abnormalities in their oral soft tissues. VELscope allows a more comprehensive oral mucosa examination and provides immediate information that can significantly reduce delays in treatment. This is particularly important considering the overall five-year survival rate for oral cancer is 52%, and this has not changed for over 25 years. Early detection of potentially malignant disease and cancerous tissue should decrease the mortality rate related to oral cancer.

The VELscope emits safe, visible blue light into the oral cavity which excites the oral tissues and causes it to fluoresce This fluorescence is viewed through the VELscope and healthy tissue typically shows up as a brighter green colour while suspicious tissue can cause a loss of fluorescence, which thus may appear dark. Possible areas of change can then be biopsied to confirm any diagnosis.

VELscope is used as a routine part of regular examinations for all patients registered at The Dental Healthcare Centre. Even though The Dental Healthcare Centre is one of the first practices in the country to have the VELscope system, unlike other practices The Dental Healthcare Centre makes no extra charge for using the VELscope as we feel it is too important a piece of equipment not to provide it routinely for all of our patients.
